Maurycy Gomulicki

Maurycy Gomulicki (b. 1969, Warsaw)

Polish graphic designer, photographer, author of installations, short films and animations; he is also a prolific book illustrator. In the late 1990s and early 2000s Gomulicki published articles in Polish pop cultural magazines such as “Machina” and “Fluid”.

He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where – from 1987 to 1992 – he studied  under the supervision of Professor Rafał Strent (graphic design) and Professor Jerzy Tchórzewski (painting). He continued his artistic education at the University of Barcelona (Facultat de Belles Arts, 1992-93), at the New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, 1994) and at the National Centre of Arts in Mexico City (Centro Multimedia del Centro Nacional de las Artes, 1997-98).

He was an artistic consultant and a photographer involved in the creation of the “ABCDF visual dictionary of Mexico City” (2000-02). His “Air Bridge” action was carried out through the joint efforts of two sister cities – San Diego (USA) and Tijuana (Mexico), united by the InSite project – Art Practices in the Public Domain (2003-05).

His artistic endeavours focus on the visual manifestations of popular culture in its  broadest sense, primarily zooming in on aesthetic liminality. The artist purposefully transgresses the invisible borders between highbrow and lowbrow cultures. He is principally eager to explore the socio-aesthetic elements which, if decontextualised and transplanted onto foreign cultures, acquire novel meanings.

Gomulicki lives and works in Warsaw and Mexico City.
